Numeracy & Literacy
Literacy and numeracy skills are essential in achieving independence and wellbeing. For students who have missed periods of schooling or have been unable to access education previously, there can often be significant gaps in literacy and numeracy skills.
When students start at the Academy, we ask them to complete a short literacy and numeracy test to assist us in assessing the gaps in their learning so we can plan accordingly. From there, students in the junior school will be assigned to different levels of our literacy and numeracy program. Senior school students will be started on the appropriate level of CGEA for their age and current skill level. That may be either Certificate I, II, or III in General Education for Adults.
For students needing significant support in Literacy, we have 4 specialised Literacy Support classes available. These groups are run by a qualified specialist Literacy Teacher who runs the Sounds-Write program for juniors and seniors and also the VTQ Initial and Intro Certificate for senior school students. These classes are capped at 6 students and 1 teacher.
