Matthew Borgward commenced as the Principal of Communicare Academy in January 2020.
Matthew has worked as a teacher at Communicare Academy since the second semester of our first year. As a dedicated teacher, Matt worked with many year groups and in many subject areas before moving into the Curriculum Leader role in 2019.
Matt has been a key figure in the Academy's development over the last 7 years and has implemented various engagement programs and curriculum ideas during his time. As a valued member of the Academy Leadership Team, Matt developed a new, wellbeing focused Behaviour Management System for students, implemented in 2019.
Since stepping into the role of Principal, Matt has led many strategic projects and developments. These include re-purposing the school courtyard to include a welcoming green space, re-designed Student Services Team with the inclusion of contracted Clinical Psychologists and a Nurse Practitioner to better support students, and the expansion of the programs and curriculum offered to our students. All while navigating the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, which struck halfway through his first Term as Principal.
Before joining Communicare, Matt completed a Bachelor of Commerce at Curtin University and worked in private business for several years. Matt grew up on a farm in a small Wheatbelt town, boarding at Aquinas College for his high school years. During his time working in private business, Matt started working in the Boarding House at Aquinas College on weekends. While working at Aquinas College, Matt realised his interest in teaching, and went on to complete a Diploma of Education at Murdoch University. After graduating, Matt moved to the United Kingdom, where he spent his first four years as a teacher working at schools in inner city London.
On returning to Perth, Matt started working at Aquinas College again while he and his wife settled back into Australian life. Matt applied for an open Academy teacher position in Term 3 in 2014 and has been a dedicated member of the team since.
As our Principal, Matt's responsibilities include: leading the school community, ensuring a safe and inclusive learning environment, implementing the Academy's strategic vision, implementing and monitoring quality teaching and learning, encouraging and supporting innovation in educational practice, ensuring operational compliance and safety, and many other governance tasks. As Principal, Matt works under the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) Principal Standards, to ensure quality leadership and implementation of best practice.
