After a tumultuous year in which the COVID-19 pandemic dominated our discussions, last week's Communicare Academy Care School Presentation Ceremony was a welcome opportunity to celebrate the proud achievements of our Class of 2020.

To accommodate our continually growing school community, the ceremony was held at The Rocks Church in Cannington, adjacent to the Communicare corporate office in Cecil Ave.

Special guests including Valerie Gould, Executive Director of the Association of Independent Schools WA, Peter Abetz, Deputy Mayor of the City of Gosnells, our CEO Melissa Perry and the Communicare Board and Executive.

This year, 18 students successfully achieved their accredited Certificates in General Education for Adults, including six Certificate I, nine Certificate II, and three Certificate III completions.

These qualifications, officially recognised by the Training Accreditation Council of Western Australia, will help students build strong pathways to further education and employment opportunities.

It takes a 'village' to achieve holistic student success, so it was important to acknowledge the parents, families, and supporters of our students on the day.

It was also an opportunity to thank our dedicated Principal Matthew Borgward, the Academy teachers, support staff and wider Communicare community, for making this challenging year a success.

The efforts of staff and students to mobilise and embrace working from home and distant learning packages during the COVID-19 lockdown was commendable.

A highlight for 2020 was the additional funding received to support current and future student needs across 'Holistic Support' (physical, emotional, mental, and social), providing an 'Engaging Curriculum' and creating a 'Positive School Environment'.

Some of this work commenced this year, with the appointment of additional staff and further school improvement to continue in 2021.

Construction of the Communicare Academy Care School in Royal Street Kenwick began in 2012 and it was officially opened in November 2015. Now in its fifth year, the Academy has supported more than 500 students in school, further education and jobs.

We wish our Academy students the greatest success for their futures as they set sail towards new horizons in 2021!
